In memoriam Andrei-Răzvan Grigorescu

Nothing is more difficult than write down thoughts about the close persons, unexpectedly departed towards a better world.

As soon as the bad news strikes you all of a sudden and after you wipe the tears from your eyes, you start reproaching yourself that you did not enjoy enough the gifts offered by their friendship, that you did not tell them how much you cherished them and what they meant for your life.

This kind of feelings lie heavy on me from the death of my lifelong friend, of the one that with respect, admiration and love I was calling “Boss”.

In order to keep his memory as bright as I can, according to his life and his deeds, I take pains to convince myself that passin awgay is just a departure to the unknown, towards the great hope of immortality. ( S.S)

“ Mourir c’est partir un peu “

We were high school colleagues at the best high school in Pitesti - „Nicolae Bălcescu” High School, no. 1, at present “Bratianu” High School and both of us took up the profession of chemist engineer, graduating the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry in Bucharest.

We met again in 1987, me, as a newly employed person at the Ministry of Chemical Industry, he, promoted deputy of the minister after he had gone through all the stages of a prodigious career: exchange engineer, chief of department, chief engineer, general manager at ARPECHIM Piteşti, manager of industrial station and then deputy of the minister.

I had a wonderful collaboration with „Andy”, as his colleagues used to call him, both during the period 1987 – 1990 when he was a deputy of the minister, and especially during the period 2001 – 2004, when he was appointed secretary of state in The Ministry of Economy and Commerce and the problems of chemical and petrochemical industry, which I was in charge of, were much more difficult to solve.

His personality, his open and unsophisticated working manner and his professionalism made him an example of efficient leader, inspired and loved by his collaborators

For all the things that Andrei Răzvan Grigorescu did, his name has an important place among the personalities of mark of the chemical and petrochemical industry of Romania.

The passing away of Andrei Grigorescu is a great loss and pain both for the colleagues, for those who met him and worked with him and for the Romanian industry.

A Man died

Andrei Răzvan Grigorescu passed away, too early, after a short and harsh suffering, one of the outstanding personalities of the Romanian industry, well-known within the country and abroad, an example of professional training for the industry and ministry fellows.

We worked together in coordinating the branches of the processing industry, in elaborating the strategies in the chemistry and hydrocarbon field, highly appreciated in the ministry and government.

He proved a full commitment in the activity, inventive and responsible spirit, a constructive working style, based on teamwork, unforgettable for those who met him and appreciated him.

He also proved the same manager qualities in the employers’ activity, beginning with the creation of the Employers’ Federation in the Oil and Gas Industry and of the Employers’ Confederation CONCORDIA, whom he was the founding member, as the president of the Oil and Gas Employers’ Federation, until his death, in 2010.

In all his activity he was supported by an extraordinary family, with a fully devoted wife and with two sons with professional achievements and exceptional spiritual qualities.

Complex personality, Andi Grigorescu was preoccupied with his spiritual improvement, having appearances and papers highly appreciated, which makes me believe that his soul lives now in an eternal and superior world.

God rest his soul !

I met him in the autumn of 1983 when he was one of the students of the Central Institute of training of leaders – the management superior school of that period.

Although he had an important position that of works manager at the Petrochemical Works Piteşti he was modest and a good colleague. He distingushed himself by optimism and sense of humour. When speciality issues were discussed, he used to interfere with passion and proved a real engineer vocation, vocation that he pointed out during his entire prodigious career. The management topics attracted him mostly and this field was a constant preoccupation during his life.

I have been honoured by his friendship for about 27 years and as a collaborator in different stages of our careers, I strived to be up to the mark of his exigencies.

He stimulated me through his example and his appreciations.

It is very difficult for me to outline in a few words all that Andrei Răzvan Grigorescu meant for the oil sector and for the Romanian industry, for me and my personal career.

He was an outstanding manager, both through his vocation and his knowledge and qualities that he permanently developed. He had a special analysis spirit, probably based on his initial education, that of chemist engineer, but also on a living curiosity in any kind of knowledge.

The important leading positions that he had did not influence his behaviour towards his collaborators, the role of life-giving person and team trainer being closer to him, than that of boss that must be obeyed unconditionally.

He knew and liked to listen when the interlocutor had something valuable to say and dealt humorously with the opinions that were “more special”. He liked challenges in leadership, he enthustiastically dashed to deal with them and the most important moments of his career provide a lot of examples in this respect: coordinating a national petrochemical system during a period when it was at its highest point, processing more than 34 million tones of oil per year; supporting with enthusiasm the reorganization measures of the oil sector after 1989 (modernization in all respects of ”Arpechim” company, the setting up and running of “Rafirom“ oil holding and of the “Romanian Company of Oil”, the reorganization of “Petrom“; coordinating the achievement of more than 27 strategies of the processing industry, etc).

He involved himself as manager as well in the private field setting forth the courage and audacity, as well as his special knowledge and abilities. In this respect, we must point out the remarkable contribution to the organization based on modern principles of the activities in the “LUKOIL Romaniagroup of companies.

Until the last moment of his life he believed in the sudden change of the Romanian petrochemistry, due to the fact that he was a very active member of the team of specialists who conceived the technical-economic solutions to restart the installations in Pitesti within “Oltchim” company.

The employers’ activity represented a challenge, too, that he accepted and in which he proved his “constructor” abilities.

I stood by him in the attempt to apply modern concepts and methods in the employers’ field as well, to stimulate this important sector for the society.

He proved again to be an open, innovative spirit, a team mate, a fine connoisseur of people.

He was a generous man who used to offer his close friends with pleasure everything that he valued most, from an idea to a good book, from personal objects to interesting memories or stories.

We miss you,”Boss”.

Silviu Sârghi

I had the privilege to be a collaborator of the Secretary of State Andrei Răzvan Grigorescu, having him as my boss during the period 2001 – 2004. I admired him for the brilliant way he knew how to be a leader.

This was due to the manners and the aristocratic appearance of this special man, permanently active, who was plunging completely into work.

He did everything he could to achieve his goals or what we were asked to do. He used to make an exceptional effort in his work, most of the times even at the cost of his health and despite a minimum protection for his life.

He used to make everything with an energy that was out of the common.

And something else, he knew how to enjoy himself, how to laugh, he liked the jokes even if they were meant for him. He seldom got angry with someone.

He knew how to be kind with any person, he was even a friend. I do not hesitate to say that I, like other colleagues, spent beside him unforgettable moments of relaxation and fun.

Due to his personality and his activity, he was an expressive and convincing model for the significance of the well made thing, of the affection for the country, succeeding, with a scarce intellectual capacity, in merging the top professional performance with the simple understanding of the real human problems, with the good word and the competent advice offered to his collaborators.

However, as Voltaire said, the highest quality of “boss” that was permanently following his profession, he was an „HONEST” man.

He joined the great majority prematurely and unfairly.
